An Opportunity in Mexico, 1931

In 1917, the Mexican federal government sent a military contingent to establish an agricultural colony in San Luis Río Colorado, northwestern Sonora, an isolated and desolate area. The colony offered military protection, land, and water. My brother was one of the settlers who took advantage of the “free land.” My brother encouraged us to join him in Sonora.

Always cautious with money, we had saved $2,000. In 1931 we set out with our five children to join my brother. Gustavo was in search of less strenuous and healthier work than the mines. Our first stop on the journey was Santa Ana, Sonora, sixty miles south of the Mexican border, where the Chinese had been forced out.9 We stayed for a week. My husband didn’t like Santa Ana because it was deserted. There was no place to buy merchandise. The Chinese who owned the stores had been exiled. I wanted to stay to establish a store, but my husband was not interested. We continued our journey.
